La Albufera (Spanish for ‘lagoon’), is a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast of the Valencian Community in eastern Spain, is one of the largest wetlands on the Iberian peninsula. It is the main portion of the Parc Natural de l’Albufera de València (“Valencian Albufera Natural Park”). The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of flora and fauna to thrive and be observed year-round.
When you’re in Valencia its highly recommended that you visit Albufera for the ideal diversification during a Valencia city trip.
One can reach this large Natural Park with public transport from Valencia City Centre (bus number 25). The 30 minute bus ride takes you through the ricefields of the village of El Palmar. After reaching Albufera you can take a 45 minute boat-trip on the lake for 4 euros in the traditional old style boats. Which I say is a must! Many small restaurants serve the best paella of the region: made with locally cultivated rice and seafood. It is a place of great ecological interest with rare species of wading birds and a rich variety of wildlife. Its waters have been traditionally worked by fishermen and rice growers, supplying ingredients and inspiration for many of the regions most succulent dishes.
During your short boat ride while exploring the Natural Park you will enjoy the entire view of the lake, the birds & ducklings you see on the way, a chat with the boat man and take photos of houses right on the water/river shore. On the way you’ll have the chance of viewing the beautiful green area of the city right few minutes out of the center, the farmers houses and the wonderful landscape. After a lunch meal, there is nothing more relaxing than a boat trip on the Albufera lake contemplating the red and amber tones of the setting sun dancing across the water.
A relaxing route, perfect for an after-lunch activity. Away from the hustle & bustle of the city, a getaway to a calmer Albufera can refresh you when you see the beautiful scenery. I found it exceedingly cheap and should not be missed if you are down that way.
